One of the largest religious activities as part of customary practice in the Bicol Region is the Peñafrancia Festival or the Feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, the Patroness of Bicol.
The city of Naga is nearly overflowing with visitors from different parts of the country due to the devotees who make yearly vows to the Blessed Mother. The main thoroughfares of Naga’s streets are almost impassable due to the sheer number of people, starting with the traslacion, the procession to the Cathedral from the Basilica Minor on August 8, and the return to the Basilica from the Cathedral on August 16.
There truly seems to be a miracle happening in the long-standing religious practice in Naga, which is the center of attention every year. We can be sure that many have had their wishes granted, which is why the crowds continue to grow year after year.
The influx of people paying their respects during the annual celebration is awe-inspiring. It’s not just a religious activity; it’s also a tradition that can never be replaced by modern times in the Bicol Region.
The advantage this year, however, is the modern technology that allows you to witness the activities through social media even if you can’t physically be in Naga. While in the past, you had to visit the location, now, if you’re on a tight budget, you can watch online because you can follow the event from different angles through TV and social media coverage.
However, being part of the event itself is still incomparable because even if you can’t fully capture the procession, being close to the Blessed Mother’s carriage and the event venue is enough. Besides the river procession in Bicol River, there are also civic events organized by the local government of Naga.
Truly, the festival is a major event that is part of the tourism attraction of Naga City in Camarines Sur.
