“Virac, Catanduanes – Congressman Eulogio “”Leo”” Rodriguez proposed prioritizing the use of abaca products in government offices throughout the country.

House Resolution No. 1060 calls for various government agencies to prioritize the use of abaca products in their supplies.

The proposal was made in response to the Abaca Festival held in Catanduanes from May 22-27, 2023, where the local government showcased various abaca products. Catanduanes was designated as the Abaca Capital of the Philippines last year after a bill was passed in Congress.

According to Rodriguez, this move will promote abaca and increase demand throughout the country. It also addresses the concerns of Abacaleros who have experienced a drop in prices due to a decline in demand in the international market.

Only S1 and S2 grades of abaca reportedly have significant domestic demand and higher prices. The resolution was proposed after Rodriguez frequently visited and spoke with abaca farmers in the province.”
