Amid the intensified efforts of the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) to combat vote-buying, COMELEC Bicol has found strong allies in law students, public administration majors, youth groups, and members of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP), as they unite under the “Kontra-Bigay” campaign.
In an interview with Radyo Peryodiko 87.9-DZBP-FM, COMELEC Regional Director Atty. Maria Juana Valeza underscored the vital role of the youth in promoting clean and honest elections.
“It’s time to end the culture of vote-buying—this is a plague that destroys the integrity of our elections and the future of our nation,” Valeza declared.
She emphasized that the COMELEC places high value on complaints from citizens regarding vote-buying, with clear mechanisms in place to address them.
“You don’t need connections—you just need courage. Gather evidence, take photos or videos with time stamps and watermarks, and send them through our hotline, QR code, or to your local COMELEC office,” she said.
During a recent forum attended by students from the College of Law and Public Administration in the province of Albay, Valeza explained the “Full Nation Approach,” wherein COMELEC collaborates with law schools, public administration schools, the IBP, and watchdog groups such as the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) to form volunteer watchdog groups. These volunteers will serve as the public’s eyes and ears on the ground during elections.
“These volunteers are not mere observers—they are the voice of the people in safeguarding the vote. But they must remain apolitical, honest, and discerning,” she stressed.
In closing, Valeza urged the youth and all voters to vote with conviction:
“Let us open our eyes. Let us not allow ourselves to be used. Choose candidates who truly have the heart to serve—not just those with catchy campaign jingles.”
“The fight against vote-buying is not the COMELEC’s fight alone. It is a fight for every Filipino who believes that the vote is not for sale—but worth fighting for.” – Atty. Maria Juana Valeza
COMELEC Bicol also assured the public that its stringent monitoring and enforcement efforts will continue to ensure clean, honest, and fair elections in the region. (via Aphol Soriao | Bicol Peryodiko NewsTeam)
