Congressman Leo Rodriguez strongly encourages the leadership of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to investigate mining and quarrying activities in the province of Catanduanes.

Despite the Provincial Board’s withdrawal of their resolution allowing small-scale carbon mining, the congressman hints at the authorities due to the lack of action on his complaints.

According to the lawmaker, it seems that the department is neglecting his concerns even before the mining issue arose in the towns of Panganiban and Dugui in Virac, where there are allegations of gold mining.

Aside from the mining issue, the congressman also raises concerns about the quarrying activities, which appear to be controlled by the local government, with only its allies seemingly having the right to avail themselves.

This system should be stopped, as it has significant environmental effects. If DENR officials in Catanduanes are hesitant, the national office should step in to enforce environmental protection laws. (BP NEWSTEAM)
