The departure of Architect Enrique “Henry” Olonan is a sad moment that calls for reflection. Once, he had a vision for the future of Catanduanes, planning to contribute to the development of the province. However, he opted not to engage in politics, disheartened by the expensive demands that come with holding elected office. Instead, he chose to work outside the realm of power, focusing on building a better future for others in his personal capacity. His dedication to uplifting communities, particularly the youth and marginalized sectors, stands as a testament to his character and deep sense of social responsibility.
While he may not have found success in politics, Architect Olonan’s true luck lay in the relationships he nurtured with his family, friends, and the many individuals who were inspired by his mantra of helping others. His contributions were not measured by titles or political achievements, but by the lasting impact he had on the lives of those around him. His legacy is one of selfless service, and he found fulfillment in making a difference where it truly mattered.
Although he may have missed the chance to be formally recognized by the people of Catanduanes through political office, the values he instilled in others will continue to resonate. His decision to step away from politics did not diminish his influence; rather, it solidified his role as a quiet but powerful force for good. He may not have sought the spotlight, but the work he did in his community speaks volumes about his commitment to others’ well-being.
I remain hopeful that his legacy will live on through his children or grandchildren, who, like him, possess the potential to lead and inspire. Many political hopefuls may not have succeeded, but the true measure of their impact lies in the generations that follow. We look forward to the day when one of his children will step forward to carry on the legacy of Architect Enrique “Henry” Olonan. May you rest in peace, Ninong Arkitek Olonan—your work and spirit will continue to inspire us all. (FB EYE/Bicol Peryodiko)
