(Did you know?) The tradition of Visita Iglesia dates back to the early centuries of Christianity, where pilgrims traveled to Jerusalem to visit 7 holy sites associated with the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Later, the practice spread to other parts of the world, including Europe and the Philippines.
Over the years the 7 different churches also represent the Seven Last Words of Jesus on the Cross or the Seven Sorrows of Mary.
Although it is a pious Lenten trandition, Visita Iglesia is only devotional. The liturgy is more important than a devotion. If youโre visiting 7 churches only to ask for blessings or penance, to feel good, to post photos in social media (facebook) and you donโt participate in the liturgy in your parish from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday, it is a waste of time (at gasolina).
Maraming nagbibisita ng mas higit pa sa 7 simbahan (para bang kung mas maraming simbahan ay mas marami din ang blessings) pero di naman dumadalo sa mga liturhiya sa parokya katulad ng misa sa gabi ng Huling Hapunan sa Huwebes Santo o sa Pagsamba sa Krus pag alas 3 ng hapon sa Biyernes Santo. Mali po ito.
Ano po ang tama? Maari tayong mag bisita ng kahit na ilang simbahan pero huwag ito gawing photoshoot o excursion , kinakailangan ang pagninilay at may kaakibat na gawaing kabutihan sa iba lalo na sa mga kapos-palad. At ang pinaka importante: huwag kalimutan ang ating partisipasyon sa mga liturhiya ng ating parokya ngayong Semana Santa.
