By: Salvador V. Isorena || Green Alert || Devastated by nature-induced and man-made calamities, the closing months of 2024 painted a bleak picture for our country—socio-economically and politically. Unfortunately, the country found itself engulfed in a cacophony of calamitous events in the likes of earthquakes, typhoons and volcanic eruptions.
The only consoling point is that, although we’re identified by the UN as the most vulnerable country not only in the ASEAN region but the world in general, we’re not alone in these nature-induced calamities brought about by man-made activities worldwide.
Apparently, highly developed, polluter countries like the United States, European Union and the like are reluctant in committing themselves in fulfilling their commitment to alleviate the socio-economic conditions of the developing and least developed countries. The Conderence of Parties [COP} 21 hosted by Dhubai recently failed to come out with a win-win situation.
Environmental and political analysts-scientists posited, abetting and /or fueling this catasthropic phenomenon include fast developing countries like China, [ who keeps on bullying the Philippines using / invoking their questionable, revised historical chronicle: 10-dash line espreketeks].
Sad to note are the non-commitment, if not , half-hearted assurance of other countries who are contributory to these critical pollution problems, aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric environments. Citizens of the world must and should realize our green planet now nearing the tipping point /11th hour or point of irreparable destruction of God’s Good Earth penned by Pearl S. Buck.
The controversies political in nature, thoroughly documented, analyzed, exposed and strongly condemned by law-abiding, enlightened citizentry including the multi-sector opposition should not be ignored or consigned as fake news, meant to destabilize the present dispensation. Allegedly, the odd, unholy alliance of the executive and legislative departments in cahoots with the left-leaning groups should be addressed seriously, with dispatch by the Marcos administration.
At the heart of the controversy and its attendant uncertainty lies at the controversial budget, fraught with “accusations of misallocation and lacking transparency, alongside an array of issues that continued to dog the Marcos administration”.
“The national budget peeged at a record-high of P5.352 trillion, has been a lightning rod for criticism. Critics argue that while th allocation for infrastructure remains robust, othr sectors such as education , healthcare, and disaster resilience have been underfunded,” a commentary from the Daily Tribune thundered on that day—December 30.
The Daily Tribune continued: “This perceived imbalance raises questions of about the administration’s priorities. For instance, despite the devastating floods caused by tropical “Kristine,” which underscored glaring gaps in the country’s flood control measures, the propsed funding for disaster mitigation remains modest at best. Similarly, while education received a significant s, concerns linger over how effectively these funds will be utilized given systemic issues in the Department of Education.”
“The Marcos administration’s response to these criticisms has been to tout its infrstructur push as a driver of economic recovery. Dubbed “Build, Better More”, this initiative aims to create jobs and stimulate growth. Yet its success hinges on the government’s ability to address bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption—long standing issues that have hampered similar programs in the past. Moreover, with the country’s debt at an all-time high of P15.69 trillion, the sustainability of such spending plans remains a pressing concern,” the commentary further added.
Adding to the nation’s woes is the specter of political instability. The year saw heightened tensions between the marcos administration and key political figures, including Vice President Sara Duterte. Her resignation as education secretary and subsequent criticism of the government’s priorities have sparked speculation about a brewing political rift which happened now beyond repair. This internal discord, coupled with calls for accountability over human rights abuses and environmental lapses, further erodes public confidence.
In fairness, the commentary echoed with positive note and safe mode: “Yet, amid these challenges, there are glimmer of hopes. The business sector buoyed by a growing interest in renewable energy and digital transformation, continues to show resilience. The successful rollout of electric vehicle incentives and the expansion of e-commerce platforms demonstrate the private sector’d capacity to adapt and innovate despite government shortcomings.”
“Likewise, the Filipino spirit of bayanihan, or communal unity, remains a powerful force, as evidenced by grassroots efforts to aid disaster-stricken communities and promote voter education ahead of the 2025 midterm elections. The upcoming elections could serve as a pivotal moment for the nation. With the filing of candidacy revealing a mix of seasoned politicians and fresh faces, the electorate has an opportunity to demand accountability and champion reform-oriente leaderds.

Be that as it may, equally amazing, doubtful, obvious, and supericial timing gets the rub: “Decemcer 30—Rizal Day holiday!, in honor of our greatest national hero—GAT JOSE P. RIZAL. And to this, may I hasten to add: “For what? To show to the entire Filipino nation [and the world kuno] that even on a holiday of national and interntional import—he’s working comprehensively, religiously, sincerely in his temporary residence for six-years: Malacanang Palace?”
That is, some pundists said, on the assumption that he survives the second half of his leadership and governance fraught with controversies and issues remained unanswered/addressed with truth and clarity. In fairness, let’s
No wonder, of the 21 senators who are supposed to witness that 2025 Budgt in the tun of Php 5.6 Trillion plus budget on two senators attended: Senate President Chiz Escudero and Sen. Grace Poe, chair, Senate Appropriaions Committee. Noteworthy is the fact that, aside from these two above-mentioned senators who were obliged to attend by virtue of their exalted mandate, none of the other senators who signed said mangled, cosmetically refined budget, opted to distanced themselves from it.

Christmas Arts. Since early times, Christmas has served as an inspiration for music, art, and poems and stories. Many of these works have become closely associated with the holiday.
Music. Christmas music covers a wide range, from light popular tunes to regal works such as Handel’s Messiah. Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker and Gian Carlo Menotti’s opera Amahl and the Night Visitors are often performed during the Christmas season.
Carols are the most traditional Christmas music. Early carols were based on dance tunes and refrains from ballads and folk songs. During the Protestant Reformation in England, carols were banned. This was because of the Puritans, who took control of the country in the mid-1600’s, felt that the music and merrymaking associated with Christmas were pagan customs. Carols returned after 1600, when the monarchy was restored.
Most of the carols today were written in the 1800’s. They include “Silent Night,” ”Hark the Herald Angels Sings,” “Away in a Manger,” and “Joy to the World.” These traditional songs have been joined by modern ones, such as “White Christmas,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and even “Jingle Bell Rock.”
Bells are also a traditional part of Christmas music. Every Christmas Eve, church and cathedral bells ruing loud and clear to all families to church services. Bells are used as decorations on Christmas trees, wreaths, and gift wrappings.
Art. The scene of the nativity has been painted by many artists. Among them were some of the great masters of the Renaissance, including Giotto, Fra Angelico, and Sandro Botticelli. The nativity is also depicted in three-dimensional crèche scenes. [Creche is the French word for “crib”]. St. Francis of Assisi is given for setting up the first crèche, using live figures, in Greccio, Italy, in 1223. In many Catholic countries, the crèche is the center of a Christmas Eve pageant that sells the story of the three Wise Men bringing gifts to the infant Christ.
Literature. Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is one of the most popular Christmas stories ever written. Several film versions of this tale have been made. “The Gift of the Magi,” by O. Henry [William Porter], is another well-known story. It tells of the efforts of a young of a young husband and wife to find gifts for each other.
The poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” has been part of Christmas in the United States since 1823, when it was first published. Clement C. Moore wrote it for his family, and it did much to create the present image of Santa Claus. These traditional Christmas works have been joined by some modern favorites, such as Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.
Religious Ceremonies. Religious ceremonies marking the birth of Christ begin some four weeks before Christmas. The fourth Sunday before Christmas Day is the first day of Advent, the period of preparation that comes before the holiday. Many people keep track of the days in this period with Advent calendars or Advent candles. The calendars have Christmas scenes and tiny windows, one of which is opened each day to uncover a picture or verse. The candles carry the dates leading up to Christmas and are burned a set amount each day, so that on Christmas Day they are used up.
Many people also have Advent wreaths in their homes. These wreaths have four candles, one for each of the Sundays of Advent. Each Sunday, the family lights candles—one candle the first Sunday, two candles the next, and so on—and prays.
In churches, children often take part in nativity pageants, in which they act out the scenes of the Christmas story. On Christmas Eve, churches are decorated with evergreens and candles, and special candlelight and carol services are held. Most churches also hold services is the central message of Christmas: Peace and goodwill among all people. [Source: Elaine Pascoe, Writer, The Book of Knowledge Annual , Volume 3 C].
