The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) is pleased to announce the commencement of the July 2023 Labor Force Survey (LFS) and the 2023 Family Income and Expenditure Survey (FIES) in Catanduanes. These surveys play a vital role in providing valuable insights into the labor market and socio-economic conditions of households in the province.

A group of 56 data collectors and 6 Team Supervisors are currently being trained from 3-9 July 2023, to gather information from a randomly-selected sample of 1,536 households. This province-wide data collection will take place in 110 barangays starting this 10 until 31 of July 2023.

The LFS is a comprehensive survey conducted monthly and quarterly, aiming to measure the current state of the Philippine labor market. It serves as a key tool in calculating national and regional employment indicators, helping to understand employment trends, workforce characteristics, and unemployment rates.

Meanwhile, the FIES is the country’s main source of data on family income, sources of income, family expenditure including cost and consumption volume. These are used in determining the income distribution, levels of living, spending patterns, and the degree of income inequality among families.

Moreover, the FIES serves as the main source of data for estimating official poverty statistics, contributing to the development of policies and programs aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of the Filipino people.

The results from the 2021 survey revealed that the proportion of poor families in Catanduanes recorded at 16.8%.

In the full year of 2021, a family of five in Catanduanes needed at least Php11,673, on average, to meet their basic food and non-food needs in a month. This represented a 14.9% increase from the poverty threshold computed in 2018.

The poverty incidence among families in 2021 was estimated at 16.8%, with approximately 168 in every 1,000 families falling below the necessary income level. The magnitude of poor families increased to around 10,000 in 2021 compared to approximately 8,000 in 2018.

Lastly, the PSA assures its respondents that all information collected from them shall be kept STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL and cannot be used for purposes of taxation, investigation, or law enforcement procedure, nor will it be published except in the form of statistical summaries in which no reference to any individual person shall appear.
