SP reconsidering their Mining Ordinance due to public clamor
The Sangguniang Panlalawigan seemingly reconsider the previously approved ordinance allowing small-scale coal mining in Catanduanes, as confirmed by Vice Governor Peter Cua. This comes after the approval of an ordinance in October temporarily suspending the Mining Free Ordinance of 2013, which was passed during the tenure of former Governor Araceli B. Wong and Vice Governor Jose “Bong” Teves, Jr.
According to information relayed to Radyo Peryodiko last Saturday, Vice Governor Cua stated that due to the strong opposition from the public against mining, they will recall the ordinance, despite the Provincial Council’s initial intention to assist struggling residents. He mentioned, “Since the call to stop mining is louder than the intent of the SP to help struggling residents, the SP on Monday, December 4, 2023, will recall the Ordinance temporarily allowing small-scale mining of coal in Catanduanes.”
The sudden change by the Provincial Council has brought relief to sectors that expressed their opposition to the mining ordinance. This includes the Catanduanes Kontra Mina Movement, Knights of Columbus, Tau Ghama Phi, and the Diocese of Virac. (Report by Jean Eustaquio)
