San Miguel, Catanduanes — From the rural fields of San Miguel to the national topnotcher list, Crystal Jayden Espura Taperla proves that success is not defined by honors, wealth, or privilege—but by faith, hard work, and a relentless spirit. Her story stands as an inspiration not only to Catanduanes but to aspiring nurses across the country.
Rising from the humble life of a farmer’s family and the daily challenges of being a working student, known for nickname Jayden of Catanduanes State University (CatSU) has earned a prestigious spot as Top 9 in the Philippine Nurse Licensure Examination (PNLE). Her journey—marked by hard work, faith, and perseverance—proves that extraordinary success can come from the most ordinary beginnings.
In an exclusive interview of Radyo Peryodiko 87.9DZBP-FM, Crystal admitted she did not wait for the exam results because of overwhelming anxiety. She even remembered more of her mistakes than her correct answers. But this morning, her sibling delivered the news she least expected—she ranked 9th nationwide.
As a Jehovah’s Witness, she attributes her achievement to prayer, steadfast faith, and disciplined preparation. “No superstitions, no luck—just prayer, review, and focus,” she said.
Crystal was born and raised in District 1, San Miguel, by her mother Amelita and Disdado Taperla and her two older brothers. Life was simple in their farming household, but full of hard work and determination.
After taking the exam in Legazpi, she returned home after some days to find their kitchen damaged by Typhoon Uwan and some of their farm animals affected. Instead of discouraging her, the situation strengthened her resolve and reminded her of why she needed to succeed.
Crystal was not a Latin honor graduate. She only became a Dean’s Lister once during her first year in college. Yet behind that modest academic record was a student who: juggled work and studies, tutored other students to earn extra income, served as Academic Commissioner, and relied on grit, focus, and her family’s limited but heartfelt support.
“You don’t need honors to become a topnotcher. Nothing is impossible if you study with heart,” she emphasized.
Crystal credits much of her success to her training at Top Rank Academy. She topped three pre-board examinations—placing Top 1 in one and Top 2 in two others. According to her, the review process was even more demanding than her entire college experience.
“The board exam is a real battle in life, and the review is the toughest preparation,” she shared.
Crystal expressed deep gratitude to Catanduanes State University, especially to University President Gemma G. Acedo and the faculty of the College of Health Sciences.
“I wouldn’t be here without their support and guidance,” she said.
She gave special acknowledgment to Dr. Jordan, her retired Pharmacology professor.
“He gave me my lowest grade, but also the most important lessons about discipline and focus. I learned so much from him.”
Despite suggestions that she pursue Medicine, Crystal said she has no immediate plans. She wants to: take a break, reflect, and engage in volunteer work before deciding on her next steps.
Crystal thanked everyone who congratulated her and supported her journey, and acknowledged Radyo Peryodiko as the first media outlet to interview her after the results were released. | Francis Benedict | BicolTeleRadyoPeryodikoNews
